FAQs
Why the Amazon, and why Canadian Wildflowers?
Because they represent the two places that shaped both me (Rory, the founder) and my formulas.
I was born and raised in Brazil, where I grew up surrounded by Amazonian botanicals and learned firsthand how powerful they are — rich in antioxidants, deeply restorative, and trusted by our ancestors.
Now, living in Canada, I grow chamomile, calendula, and lavender on my own flower farm. These calming, soothing, skin-healing plants balance the intensity of the Amazon with gentle, local nourishment.
Bringing these two worlds together allows me to create skincare that’s both high-performance and deeply comforting — rooted in heritage, grown with care, and crafted with intention.
Do your products contain preservatives?
It depends on the formula: Anhydrous products (water-free) do not require a preservative. These include our balms, oils, and oil-based treatments. Products that contain water or may come in contact with water (for example: Revigorating Serum) do include a preservative system.
We use a carefully selected combination of natural and naturally derived preservatives to ensure product safety, stability, and freshness.
Are your products third-party tested?
Safety is at the heart of everything we create. Any product that contains water is sent to a third-party laboratory to verify that the preservative system is effective.
We keep all documents and results from these independent labs on record.
In addition, every single batch of products that contain water made in the Plain & Supple Lab undergoes microbial testing.
If anything looks questionable or outside acceptable parameters, the batch is immediately discarded.
Your peace of mind matters — and so does the integrity of every formula.
Are your products tested on animals?
No. In accordance with Canadian and U.S. regulations, cosmetic products can no longer be tested on animals. What sets Plain & Supple apart is our commitment to going beyond the legal minimum: We carefully source ingredients from suppliers who also do not conduct animal testing.
Plain & Supple is Leaping Bunny certified, which requires a full supply-chain audit and annual recommitment to their cruelty-free standards.
This means every step — from raw materials to finished product — aligns with the highest global cruelty-free standard.
Who makes the formulas and do they have any credentials to formulate cosmetics?
All Plain & Supple formulas are designed and crafted by me — Rory, the founder. I am a certified Organic Skincare Formulator through Formula Botanica, a globally recognized school for cosmetic formulation. I continue to study advanced modules to deepen my expertise and stay aligned with the most current science and best practices in skincare formulation.
Every product is crafted with intention, technical knowledge, and a deep respect for both effectiveness and safety.
Where are your products made?
Plain & Supple products are made in our Plain & Supple Lab in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, following the most up-to-date, safe, and hygienic manufacturing practices and procedures.
My skin is sensitive — can I use Plain & Supple products?
Plain & Supple products are formulated with care for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Each formula is thoughtfully balanced and made with gentle, skin-loving ingredients. That said, some products do contain essential oils, so we always recommend doing a patch test first to ensure compatibility with your unique skin.
Are Plain & Supple products safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Plain & Supple products are generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and there are no known contraindications in our formulas. Even the essential oils we use are included at levels that are widely regarded as safe during this time. That said, every situation is unique, so we always recommend consulting your healthcare provider before introducing any new product into your routine.
I have acne. Can I use Plain & Supple products?
Yes — Plain & Supple products are generally safe for acne and acne-prone skin, and several of them may actually support your skin goals.
Gentle Balm Cleanser: Formulated to cleanse deeply without stripping the skin, it helps remove excess oil, SPF, and impurities in a way that supports the skin barrier instead of disrupting it.
Revigorating Serum: Hydrates, plumps, and supports cellular renewal. The niacinamide in the formula is known for calming visible redness, supporting barrier repair, and helping improve the look of post-acne pigmentation.
Plain & Supple Face Oil: Helps keep moisture levels balanced — skin sometimes becomes oily to compensate for a lack of moisture, so supporting healthy moisture can actually help reduce that cycle. The formula includes rosehip oil, often recommended for acne-prone skin due to its lightweight feel and high linoleic acid content.
It also contains copaiba and grapefruit essential oil, which are known to be beneficial for acne prone skin due to their antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and antibacterial properties.
As with any skincare — especially when dealing with acne — a patch test is recommended. If you’re using prescription acne treatments, you may want to check with your dermatologist to ensure your routine works well together.
How should I store my Plain & Supple products?
To keep your products fresh and performing at their best, store them away from light, heat, and humidity. Look at the notes below for your Balm Cleanser and Lip Butters/Lip Dew.
Balm Cleanser: If you keep it in the bathroom, always scoop it using the clean, dry spoon provided to avoid introducing moisture. Whenever possible, store it on a separate shelf, not directly on the sink or in a place where water may splash into the jar.
Lip Butters & Lip Dew: These formulas contain delicate plant butters that can change texture when exposed to heat. Temperature fluctuation may cause them to form crystals. Avoid keeping them in pockets, cars, or any warm environment.
Proper storage helps maintain the integrity, texture, and safety of your products.
